INDIA: Unitet Protest Meeting in Delhi University 16 / 01 / 2016
The rejection of Dr. G.N. Saibaba's bail petition by a single judge bench of the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court on 23rd December has forced him back to the anda cell of the Nagpur Central Jail. This was the same place where in his last 14 month incarceration, Saibaba developed several health problems. In that period, he had to fight for basic facilities including regular medicines and other facilities required for a 90% disabled prisoner. After his re-arrest, all these facilities are once again unavailable - as pointed by Saibaba in his recent letters from prison. More than insensitivity on the part of the prison authorities, this is reflective of the state machinery’s attempts to coerce him into silence through such means which amount to nothing but custodial torture. The lawyers handling Saibaba's case have challenged the High Court order in the Supreme Court, and it is going to be listed on the 18th January. Everyday that Saibaba spends in prison is an affront on our democratic conscience and it is the responsibility of all progressive and democratic sections to unitedly fight for his immediate and unconditional release.
We appeal to everyone to join the United Protest Meeting called at Delhi University Arts Faculty on 16th January (Saturday) at 2 pm in large numbers. It will be addressed by Saibaba's colleauges and teachers of Delhi University, JNU and Ambedkar University, civil society activists, political leaders, students, intellectualls, etc.
